Dear Religious Family:

Our parish of St. Joseph, in Osasco, province of San Pablo (Brazil) recently had the grace of giving the Blessed Mother new daughters, the “Daughters of Mary”. For those of you who are not familiar with this group, it began with one of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin to St. Catherine Laboure, on November 27, 1830. In this apparition, the Most Blessed Virgin Mary expressed the desire that there were a group called the “daughters of Mary”, with the aim that the youth would honor her. These youths must wear the medallion of Our Lady of Grace on a blue ribbon. The first group was established on September 8, 1837, at the parish of St. Pierre, in Paris, under the name of the Association of the Daughers of Mary Immaculate, and in 1847 it received the approbation of Pope Pius IX. The principle objectives of the Daughters of Mary are:

1) To seek holiness, imitating the virtues of Our Lady in the example of the saints; especially our patron saints: Blessed Laura Vicuña and St. Therese of the Child Jesus;

2) To increase devotion to the Blessed Virgin and to protect the innocence of young women, guiding them through counsels and religious practices, to the exact fulfillment of their duties to God;

3) To take care in the liturgy of the Holy Mass, for just as Mary was at the foot of the Cross of Our Lord, so also the daughters of Mary must be at the feet of Jesus in his unbloody Sacrifice;

4) To maintain a spirit of prayer and piety in Church.[1]

The Mass was celebrated by the pastor, Fr. Marcos Funchal, who dedicated his homily to the parents in thanksgiving for the gift of their daughter for this holy service. After the homily the girls pronounced their formula of consecration, receiving the blue ribbon with the medallion. Eighteen new daughters of Mary were enlisted, bringing the group to a total of fifty.

We desire, with our group, to console the Immaculate Heart of Mary and to propagate devotion to it, in a special way in the children and youth. We ask your prayers for our apostolates, that there may continue to be children and youth who are preserved from the world, who do the will of God and listen to His voice.
