During the month of December our Religious Family of the Incarnate Word organized two popular missions in southern Chile, seeking to put into practice what the Holy Father said in his apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium: “A Church which ‘goes forth’ is a Church whose doors are open. Going out to others in order to reach the fringes of humanity does not mean rushing out aimlessly into the world. Often it is better simply to slow down, to put aside our eagerness in order to see and listen to others, to stop rushing from one thing to another and to remain with someone who has faltered along the way. At times we have to be like the father of the prodigal son, who always keeps his door open so that when the son returns, he can readily pass through it.” (46)

One of the missions took place in the city of Angol. Fr. Fernando Vicchi preached the Angol mission and he was accompanied by a group of seminarians and sisters from Argentina. The other mission took place in Los Sauces, a community about 30 kms from Angol, and it was preached by Fr. Jose Hernandez and Fr. Gustavo Lombardo, and a group of novices and sisters participated in organizing the mission activities.

In the same apostolic exhortation the Holy Father also said that ‘life is attained and matures in the measure that it is offered up in order to give life to others” (EG, 10). It is for this reason that during these days of mission the numerous activities that took place involved working with kids, visiting elderly homes, visiting schools in order to give formational talks, taking recreational outings with kids and youth of the area, and collaborating with a daily radio show under the direction of the novices.

In addition, the priests administered the sacraments to the sick and were hearing confessions non-stop. At the Mission’s Closing Mass many of faithful received the scapular of Our Lady of Carmel and at the end of the mass the missionary cross was installed. The missionary cross serves as a reminder to the faithful of Los Sauces of the moments of grace that God had given them during the days of mission and to constantly invite them to work daily for the salvation of their souls.

We entrust the fruits of these missions to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Queen and Mother of our fatherland, and we thank God for all the benefits poured out in the souls during these special days filled with the “showers of grace”.
